Niederösterreich treibt die Elektrifizierung seines Regionalverkehrs mit Batterietechnik voran. Mobilitätsminister Peter Hanke, Landeshauptfrau Johanna Mikl-Leitner und Verkehrslandesrat Udo Landbauer haben die Finanzierung von sieben weiteren Akkutriebzügen für die Regionalbahnen des Bundeslands fixiert. Die neuen Fahrzeuge vom Typ Cityjet FLIRT Akku werden im Rahmenvertrag von den Österreichischen Bundesbahnen bei Stadler Rail bestellt und sollen mit dem Fahrplan 2028/2029 in Betrieb gehen.
Die Investitionssumme für die zusätzlichen Züge liegt bei rund 63 Millionen Euro und wird über die Personenverkehrssparte der ÖBB abgewickelt. Die Finanzierung der Verkehrsdienste teilen sich Bund und Land: Der Bund übernimmt etwa 70 Prozent der Kosten, Niederösterreich rund 30 Prozent. Bereits ab 2028 sollen insgesamt 16 Akkutriebzüge schrittweise auf der Kamptal- und der Kremserbahn zwischen St. Pölten und Horn eingesetzt werden; zudem ist der Einsatz auf der Erlauftalbahn im Mostviertel vorgesehen.
Die FLIRT-Akkuzüge verfügen nach Angaben des Landes unter anderem über Klimatisierung und barrierefreie Einstiege. Verantwortliche sprechen von einer deutlichen Qualitätsverbesserung für Fahrgäste, insbesondere für Pendlerinnen und Pendler, die von mehr Komfort und verlässlicheren Verbindungen zwischen Wohn- und Arbeitsort profitieren sollen. Landeshauptfrau Mikl-Leitner verweist zudem auf die erwarteten Impulse für den Tourismus in Kamptal, Krems und Erlauftal, da besser ausgebaute Bahnangebote Ausflugs- und Urlaubsregionen leichter erreichbar machten.
Aus klimapolitischer Sicht setzen die Partner auf einen schrittweisen Ersatz der bisher eingesetzten Dieseltriebwagen. Laut Mobilitätsminister Hanke reduziert der Betrieb mit Akku-Zügen den CO₂-Ausstoß im Regionalverkehr pro Jahr um rund 1.200 Tonnen und spart etwa eine halbe Million Liter Diesel ein. Das Ministerium sieht darin einen Beitrag zur Dekarbonisierung des Regionalverkehrs und zur Sicherung der Daseinsvorsorge im ländlichen Raum Niederösterreichs, während das Land die Beschaffung als klares Bekenntnis zum Erhalt und zur Modernisierung seiner Regionalbahnen wertet.
